Minecraft
Minecraft, one of the best-selling games on Xbox 360, is now available on Xbox One. Your kids likely have already heard of this one, but if not its a great place to start a child playing video games. Minecraft is kind of like virtual Lego. Kids can create living rooms, plant gardens, tame pets, dig for diamonds and countless more creative world building activities. There are several game mode options from freeplay to following objectives, giving your child the freedom to express themselves and build their dreams. If your child hasn’t played this yet… Minecraft is definitely one of the best Xbox One games for kids hands down. Skylanders SuperChargers
Skylanders was the first video games that allows you to bring “toys-to-life” and have real small plastic figures you can play with, also appear in the video game you are playing. You place the toys on the Portal and they will appear alive and able to be controlled in the game. Each one will have slighlty different powers and abilities. Plastic monsters, a Portal of Power, all in a vibrant, family-friendly video game – Skylanders is a kid friendly RPG with lots of colorful and fun characters, interesting puzzles and fun little mini games to play. Skylanders SuperChargers is the latest version for Xbox One and can get your kids playing right out of the gate without any additional toys to purchase.

Rayman Legends
Rayman legend is a side platformer (means your character moves sideways across the screen, jumps, dodges and avoids falling into holes and enemies who attack you – think Super Mario). Up to 4 people can play this at the same time, which makes it a fun game for multiple kids and family members to play together. Collect items, free captured friends and unlock up to 120 different levels of gameplay. Its a beautiful game with gradual increase in difficulty. Just Dance
Just dance is part of the dance along in front of your TV to popular music series of video games. Normally to do this you are required to use the Kinect Sensor with your Xbox One. If you don’t have one you can download a free app to your smart phone and use that as the controller. I’m not sure you would want your younger children dancing around with your smart phone, but the option is now available and would work well for teens. The game itself is pretty straight forward. You select a song alone or as part of a group and you follow the on screen movements to well, dance along. This is a great game to get your kids up and moving while still enjoying a fun video game experience. Its also a good game for a group of kids to play when you have a bunch over. Just Dance 2016 offers a bunch of the latest hits from “Uptown Funk” to classics like Grease “The One That I Want”.

Plants Vs Zombies : Garden Warfare
Plants Vs Zombies started as a very popular mobile app game where cute little plants take out hordes of cute zombies. Moving to Console – Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is a family friendly shooter without the horror elements. Blast zombies, plants and fun characters across a world that delivers the depth of a traditional online shooter blended with the refreshing humor of Plant vs. Zombies. You get to play as either a plant or a zombie and take out the other team while working together with your team mates. You can also personalize your characters with fun hats, sunglasses and tons of unique items. This game does require generally require using an Xbox Live Gold account and some online play is required. This may not be appropriate for all children. This is a good intro into the online shooter world while still leaving out violence that is associated with many others in the ‘online shooter’ type games. This game can also be played split screen with 2 people in the same room. Good for parents and kids playing together.

Project Spark
Project Spark is similar to Minecraft, but really taking it to the next level. You can create a multitude of worlds, game types and themes in whatever you can imagine. Project Sparks also offers a “play function” for these created worlds. So after you’ve created the ultimate video game world include characters who speak, doors that open, evil monsters who can attack you, and treasure to be found, you can then upload this game to share with friends and others around the world who will play it. You can customize every single part of the game down to the smallest detail – what the characters look like, say, move, facial expressions – you name it. Project Spark may be better suited to slightly older children, who might be interested in learning how to create their own complete video game, but younger kids will find lots of premade games to fully enjoy.

Fantasia Music Evolved
Fantasia is another game that uses the Kinect. You use your body to control and direct over 30 songs kind of like Disney Sorcerers apprentice – the classic movie where mickey directs the brooms to do his cleaning. In Fantasia Music Evolved , a song is selected and the Kinect will show your silhouette on the screen. You then direct with your arms in time to the music and gain points for creativity and streaks of hits. Its similar to the dance games, but with more emphasis on music and timing. There is no failing or losing in the game though as a good portion is based on creativity. There is a two player split screen co-op mode. Young children and creative, music types will enjoy this game of music meets video.
