Armello is a new game that came out on September 1, 2015 from independent game studio, League of Geek. They are a group of talented individuals who have gotten together over the last 5 years to create their first game – Armello. I got to play the game at E3, as well as was provided an advance demo copy for this Armello Review. You can tell they put their heart and soul into this amazing game! All this started way back in 2011, and a kickstarter back in 2012 helped get it ported on to several other platforms and consoles.
Armello is a visually stunning game that combines tactical card play, rich tabletop strategy and even some various RPG elements. It may remind you of several other games in the table top marketplace. All mixed into one. With awesome graphics.
You play as one of 4 Animals – Wolf, Bear, Rabbit, or Rat – with the remaining 3 as other real life players or as AI. They have just added 4 more characters since the Beta, But I havent played with them much yet. Much like Settlers of Catan, Armello allows you to control your character and gather various resources. Magic, gold, items and more can be acquired on your mission to take over the kingdom. There’s a lion king at the center of this world but alas, he is not a good king. There are 4 different ways to win the game. There is a very advanced tutorial that explains all the parts of the world and helps you to unlock the various characters and items. I fully recommend playing through this, before you step into multiplayer.
Initially, there is a lot going on. There is a fuzzy turn system in use, so for example, you can play your spells and traps at various points during other peoples turns. It is somewhat complicated to keep track of your own items, learn whats going on, while looking at what your competition is doing, all while learning the commands needed to actually play the game. It gets easier though. A game or two and you will fully understand the rot, magic and items on your quest for world domination. At E3, Within a few minutes of the developers telling me the general idea, I was on my way to storming the castle.
After all 4 players have taken their turn, Day turns to Night and we carry on. Some characters have advantages at night, others at day. Each character has a certain play style based on the bonuses and features it gets.
Multiplayer is a fun way to play with your friends.
Game Features
I’ll say it again. The artwork is beautiful. The music is good. They spent a lot of time creating this game and I really enjoyed playing it. Check it out on your platform of choice – PlayStation 4, Windows, Mac and Linux.
