Public Mobile SIMSwap

Public Mobile is giving you the chance to get a brand new free SIM card and a surprise gift. All you have to do is trade in a useless item and upload a picture to social media as part of the #SIMSwap program. Phone plans in Canada can be confusing and costly. That’s why I wanted to share Public Mobile’s new program, as they are little bit different than the big carriers

Who is Public Mobile?

In case you have never heard of them, Public Mobile is a SIM only, prepaid Canadian mobile brand that operates on the TELUS 4G LTE Network. They were originally launched on March 2010 and acquired by Telus in October 2013.This means, you have nationwide coverage across Canada. All you have to do is bring your own phone and everything is pay as you go without any contract. There are no stores or call centers with long waits, which help keep costs down. However they have a very large active online help community to answer any questions you might have.

There are some interesting features to Public Mobile:

  1. No contract or weird surprise fees
  2. You create your own plan from options like province wide calling, North America calling, text or no text and many other customized to your exact needs at 10, 30 and 90 day options.
  3. A Special Rewards program that offers discounts to your plan like $$$$ off each month for loyalty, signing up for auto pay, contributing to the online community and referring friends

If you’ve been on a phone plan for a while you might want to try Public Mobile’s #SIMSwap program. You get to try your phone on a new SIM card and test out if you can save yourself a bunch of money.  For example there is a $40/month Province wide talk, Global text and 2 Gigs of data. That’s a pretty good deal depending on your current plan, which can easily be in the $100’s for something similar.

Will My Phone Work on Public Mobile?

Public Mobile works on following frequencies:

  • For 3G use (UMTS/HSPA): 850MHz/1900MHz bands
  • For 4G/LTE use: 1700MHz/2100MHz bands
  • For 4G/LTE use: 700 MHz band

This means most 3G,4G HSPA/ LTE phones will work on Public Mobile. You do just need to make sure your phone is unlocked.

My Personal Experience With #SIMSwap – A Public Mobile Review

I tweeted out a picture of an empty pop can and was contacted by Public Mobile shortly after. The SIM card arrived in the mail and even included a special discount gift. I was able to set up my phone with their online system which was super easy. I used the discount gift card and was up and going in a matter of minutes. After testing it out for a day on a very basic plan, I decided to upgrade and see what the other services were like. I did have a problem getting my gift card to apply to my account and wrote customer service, and they got back to me in about a week. Not ideal but the issue was resolved. The Public Mobile forums have active moderators in it that may be able to help with even billing related issues. I would try that next time if I had any concerns before emailing the generic customer support. Many common issues can be resolved in the forums. Since users are rewarded for participating in the community forum, there are lots of helpful users on a wide range of issues. Just remember to omit your personal details, unless you are private messaging with a Moderator there.

I really do enjoy having a no contract cell phone plan. It was all very simple to set up. Coverage has been amazing. I’ve had better service in several places compared to Rogers, especially in Northern Ontario while visiting my cottage. Some high-rise buildings also seemed to have better coverage than I am use to as well. It is a serious bonus in my books to be paying significantly less monthly and not having any contracts.

I also referred another friend to Public Mobile and received a discount on my account when they signed up as part of their Rewards Program. I got a text notification that I would receive $2 off my bill this month as soon as they signed up. What a great bonus for helping your friends and family out! Anyone can do this. Your friend simply has to add in your phone number when they create their account. My friend did mention they had some trouble getting their credit card details submitted and finally ended up using a voucher code bought from the store to get started. They went with the $120 – 90 days plan which beats pretty much most of the competitor plans out on the market.
